Checklist for applying to a foreign university

Selecting a program and university

Determine the country, the field of interest and the level of study (bachelor / master)
Find suitable programs through comparison sites (for example, Bachelorsportal.com, Mastersportal.com, QS Rankings, US News)
Check the requirements and deadlines on the official websites of universities
Make sure the program is suitable for your previous education and profile

Preparing for Submission

Take a language exam (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc.)
▪️ be sure to check: which exam is accepted, overall minimum score, minimum for each component, and validity of the certificate
Request letters of recommendation from teachers/employers (most teachers or employers will ask you to prepare some draft version with important details/achievements/skills you want to highlight)
Write motivation letter\additional essays (Statement of Purpose / Letter of Motivation) – if necessary
Create an academic resume (CV):
▪️ Europass — for Europe
▪️ Template Harvard CV — for the USA/the UK
Translate your diploma, transcript and certificate (if required)
▪️ a notarized or certified translation is often required
Prepare additional documents if required:
▪️ portfolio, GRE, GMAT, medical certificate, passport, photo, etc.
Check if an entrance test or interview is required

After submission

Check the application status (in your personal account and/or by email), if the required documents are missing, add them
Send the results of the language test, you can do it directly from the center (for example, from the ETS for TOEFL), if the result is available after submitting the application
Wait until the decision is made
