(Secondary school Admission Test)

What is it?

Standardized test for admission to private middle and high schools, assessing verbal, math, and reading skills.

Test Structure

The SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) is designed to assess students' verbal, math, and reading skills. It is divided into three levels based on grade:

  • Elementary Level: For students in grades 3-4

  • Middle Level: For students in grades 5-7

  • Upper Level: For students in grades 8-11

Scoring

Scores are calculated based on correct answers, with no penalty for incorrect responses.

Results include a scaled score, percentile ranking, and a breakdown of performance by section.

The Writing Sample is not scored but reviewed by schools.

Registration

Steps to Register:

  1. Create an Account:

  3. Select a Test Date and Location:

  4. Pay the Registration Fee:

    • Fees vary by test level and location.

    • Payment is made online via credit/debit card.

    • Fee waivers may be available for eligible families.

  5. Receive Confirmation:

    • You will get a confirmation email with details about your test date, time, and location.

    • Keep this confirmation for future reference.

Registration Deadlines:

  • Registration usually closes a few weeks before the test date.

  • Late registration may be possible with an additional fee.

Sections of the SSAT

  1. Verbal Section (30 minutes)

    • Focuses on vocabulary, synonyms, and analogies.

    • Tests language skills and the ability to understand word relationships.

  2. Quantitative (Math) Sections (2 x 30 minutes)

    • Two separate math sections.

    • Covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

    • Emphasizes problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

  3. Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)

    • Involves reading passages followed by multiple-choice questions.

    • Tests the ability to understand and interpret texts from various subjects.

  4. Writing Sample (25 minutes)

    • Requires a brief essay on a given topic.

    • Not scored, but sent to schools as part of the application.

  5. Experimental Section (Middle and Upper Levels, 15 minutes)

    • Contains unscored questions for future test development.

    • Does not impact the overall score.
